American Shingle files for bankruptcy
After being plagued by complaints from consumers, a Charlotte-based roofing company has filed for bankruptcy.
American Shingle, which was under investigation from the North Carolina Office of Consumer Affairs, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on September 3.
According to a report from Charlotte television station WMAZ, the consumer affairs office will urge the company's bankruptcy trustee to use his power to regain money that it believes was illegally taken from the company. A spokesman for the Bibb County Sherriff's office said that it, too, has been investigating American Shingle and will soon bring criminal charges against its owners.
The report said that the company shut down on August 16 after allegedly taking down payments on roofing jobs from hundreds of people in 10 different states, but never completing any work. Customers who were defrauded and contacted law enforcement officials are estimated to have given between $50,000 and $100,000 to American Shingle.
The Charlotte Better Business Bureau told the local Fox television affiliate said that American Shingle was one of the most complained-about companies it has ever seen, and the company's supplier says it is still owed $70,000.
