What love can do
My client was in my office yesterday because of love. His wife of twenty-five years died three years ago. Loneliness drove him to begin talking with women on the internet, which in itself if perfectly acceptable. However, he soon began a relationship that would lead to financial trouble. He started talking to a woman in Africa who said that her father was very rich, 45 million rich to be exact. The only problem according to her was that the government was holding the money in some kind of special account, and she needed help to gain access to it. As a result, he opened up a checking account for her so that she could begin moving the money to America. She then began requesting money to pay certain fees, and also money to get her from Africa to the States so that they would be able to get married. The client did not have much money to begin with, as he was currently on Social Security, so he began using credit cards. As it presently stands, he has seen neither her nor a penny of the 45 million, but has, on the other hand, sunk into $45,000 worth of credit card debt.
First I told him that I think he had scammed, which of course, he did not want to believe. I then told him that he should file for Chapter 13 Bankruptcy, so that we could put his car, a loan at the credit union, and all of the credit card debt in a plan with monthly payments of around $350 for four years.
