Filing a bankruptcy is a difficult task. Therefore, many people hire an attorney to help them through the process to get financial relief. However, it is not enough for an attorney to just file a case and hope it all goes well without staying in touch with their clients.

Unlike some fields of law, representation of a client in a bankruptcy case can take up to five years. In this period of time, a lot can happen to a client. Therefore, it is paramount that a client and the attorney over the duration of the case keep the lines of communication open.

Some Judges, in the practice of bankruptcy, grill the attorneys that lose touch with their clients because the Judge may feel that the representation of the particular client is less than adequate when certain issues arise. However, the attorney can only do so much if the client has moved without forwarding a change of address, changed telephone numbers or even e-mail addresses without their attorney’s knowledge. Too many times you will see that a client who loses touch with his attorney that doesn’t know what is going on in their case until something bad happens, and then when they finally do contact the attorney it is too late.

When it is time to file your bankruptcy case, pick a firm that you know you can marry for at least a five years. The relationship with your bankruptcy attorney is just that, a marriage. And in a marriage, communication is key.
