Why Lie to Your Attorney?
I will never understand why Debtors feel the need to lie to their attorneys. And the funny thing is they usually lie over something that is unimportant. Sometimes I know they lie to make themselves look better or so they don’t have to take the blame for being in a bad financial situation, but other times it is over stupid stuff.
I have a client who we have been unable to get in touch with. We don’t have a good number, they won’t respond to our email, and they won’t respond to our letters. Finally, after about a month of trying to get in touch with them, they respond to us by fax. For some reason they felt the need to lie about never receiving any of our emails. However, I know they did receive at least some of the emails, because the only way they could have gotten my personal fax number is through my email.
Another problem, none of the letters said anything about us trying to email them, but they knew they didn’t receive any of the numerous emails we sent. Last, I asked them a couple questions via email but not in the letters I sent, and they managed to answer all my questions.
Sometimes I can understand a Debtor lies about something insignificant so they don’t look bad, but why lie about something as unimportant as if you received an email? I have so many Debtors lie to me about stuff; sometimes I find it frustrating because they lie about important issues, but other times I just find it amusing. I always wonder if our clients think we are that dumb, because they are not good at lying and it doesn’t help their case.
People pay good money to their attorneys, but fail to give them accurate information so they can get the best advice possible. I just don’t understand why people think lying will help instead of hurt their case. The truth always has a way of coming out.
