What if I Win The Lottery After Filing Bankruptcy?
A popular question that has arose from two Chapter 13 clients was “What if I win the lottery or come in to some money while I am in bankruptcy”. I thought it was interesting that in one day I had the same question come up. I explained to them that any money that they come into they will have to let us know and they can’t spend the money. They will have to wait to spend after the trustee disburses any money they want to disburse, which will most likely pay off all your creditors and get you out of bankruptcy. If you have any money left after that is said and done, you will receive the difference and then you will be able to spend away. Anytime you have a question about money you receive you should check with your attorney’s office to make sure what you should do before spending any money. Remember that there are no stupid questions and you should ask any questions that are necessary to understand and not do the wrong thing.
