Concerns about Filing Bankruptcy

Most people have never filed bankruptcy before, and it seems very scary. There are so many questions and unknowns. Many people think it is wrong and unethical to file bankruptcy. They feel embarrassed and don’t want their friends and family to find out. These are all very valid concerns, but they can be addressed and all questions answered by talking to a Bankruptcy Attorney or a financial advisor who knows Bankruptcy Law.

First, filing a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy does not make a person unethical. Bankruptcy is a tool that is there to help Debtors who have had financial problems, many of which the Debtor had no control (medical problems, divorce, loss of job, etc). Many Debtors are left with the option of not paying the Creditors and dealing with the collection calls or filing bankruptcy. Filing bankruptcy will get the collection calls to stop and allow a Debtor to start getting their financial affairs back on track.

Second, filing bankruptcy is nothing to be embarrassed about. People of all occupations and backgrounds file bankruptcy. It is not limited to a certain type of person. Unless a Debtor tells people he has filed bankruptcy, most likely nobody he knows will have to find out. There are a few exceptions, such as if a family member is a co-debtor on one of his debts. For the most part, the only people that will find out of the bankruptcy filing are the people the Debtor tells.

Third, most bankruptcy attorneys will meet with a Debtor and give them a free consultation. This allows a Debtor to get all the answers to their questions and feel more confident in the decision they make.
