How do you get rich? If it’s something you’re interested in exploring you might want to start by analyzing some of the qualities of the richest Americans. Although some come by their wealth by luck or they inherit it, it seems most of those who are rich have a few characteristics in common.
In fact, wealth experts have analyzed the top characteristics of some of the rich, and while most of the answers like hard work, education, risk taking and frugality might not surprise you, there are some traits that might. So if you want to be rich let’s take a little closer look at what it really takes.
Characteristics of the rich
If you want to be rich and successful it’s no surprise that one of the most important traits is to work hard. In fact, most of those who are rich report they do not limit themselves to the 40 hour per week work week – a 60- to 80-hour work week is more the norm. They also do not take many vacations, and if they do, they make it a “working” vacation.
Next, if you want to get really rich it’s important to have the entrepreneurial spirit, which means you are willing to take risks. There are many executives in corporations who are wealthy, but most of the wealthiest Americans started their own companies. It’s not unusual for the super wealthy to be seen as risk takers or visionaries. They often will move past sole proprietorship, and partner with others to expand their businesses.
The super rich also have a plan and the energy to put their vision into motion. They generally do not sleep much, have upbeat, positive personalities and they are willing to put forth the energy and effort to make their dreams come true.
Experts also described the rich as confident. Confidence in themselves and others keeps them from getting discouraged. The rich have the notion that they can accomplish anything with enough effort, planning and risk-taking. Some described this feeling as entitled, which can lead to a lack of empathy for other people, but when channeled appropriately, it simply gives the individual confidence to overcome obstacles.
Wealthy often live below their means
Accumulating great wealth also may require rich individuals to live modestly or one step below their growing wealth. If you want to accumulate wealth you have to choose not to bump up your life-style every time your income increases. Who are the super rich? They may be the millionaires at the end of your street who drive the same car and live in the same house for thirty years.
Finally, the rich often have something the general populace lacks- grit. Grit is the determination and resilience never to give up. If they fail at something once they keep trying until they master it. They think with enough hard work they can succeed. They are not victims but believe their success is dependent on their own efforts.
The richest are not always the smartest guys in the room but they know how to work towards their goals and find other people to help them realize their vision.
